Tailgate Theft, Truck Owners need to See

What’s the next best thing hotter than sliced bread to being stolen these days? I’m sure you’re thinking diamonds or televisions, but are you ready for this? The National Insurance Crime Bureau(NICB) reported last Thursday that there has been an increase in the number of truck tailgates stolen since 2009.  There were close to 1400 claims made and those claims were reported to be in 45 different states.
Some of the leading states reporting these crimes were Texas and California, however with the increase happening more people could be jumping on board or on the back of your pick up truck.
According to the experts a tailgate can be removed in as quick as 20 seconds and is more than likely being stolen for parts.  It’s also suspected that some sorry sap had his back flapper stolen/damaged and he just wants a cheap, quick and dishonest replacement.
The replacement could be costly for some,  with the average repairs estimating around $1000 for most models. Depending on the vehicle those costs are often covered by insurance as long as you have theft coverage.
Of the models that are favored for theft,  would be the Ford F250, FordF150, and the Chevy Silverado.
The number of theft are increasing only partially due to more people reporting these claims.
Many of the owners may not have theft insurance on their vehicles, however, the NICB states that it could be people are afraid that reporting this could raise their premiums.  If you are in fear of this happening to one of your vehicles, prevention is key.
One of the ways to your tail from getting ripped off is to use an integrated lock.  It’s not easy to steal the back part if it’s locked up properly.
Another good policy is to have the vin number etched into the back of the vehicle.
